CHAPTER FIVE

AMETHYST

It wasn’t twenty minutes before Dominic was at my door, a duffel bag over his shoulder, and two more of his Swiss Army dropouts flanking him. “Do you have everything?” he demanded. His face was flushed, and his eyes were bright, I imagined from the exertion of routing the three idiots who had breached his private space. I’m pretty sure they’d suffered.

Excellent.

He grasped my two cases, much as he had the last time . . . when I’d mistaken him for the bellboy, but this time, he was moving with swift purpose.

“Where are we going?” I asked.

Instead of answering, he barked orders at his men, and one stepped smoothly in front of me; the other behind. Back into the staff corridor we went, and down, down, to a small underground parking lot that hysterically reminded me of the Bat Cave. I was being protected by another billionaire social justice warrior.

Idling, there was a dark green BMW SUV, and I was relieved to note that the glass was tinted. An achingly thin man got out of the car, took my bags, and launched them into the trunk, along with Dominic’s duffel. Then he nodded at me solemnly. “Mademoiselle Amethyst, on behalf of the Artemis, let me assure you that an investigation is underway, and those who are responsible for this breach will soon no longer be in our employ.”

“Thank you, Enzo,” Dominic said, holding the door open for me and indicating with his head that I should get in.

Even though I’d only known this man a few days, I got in without hesitation. I don’t know why, but I trusted him. And furthermore, whatever was inside that car, wherever he was planning to take me, was way better than whatever was waiting for me out there.
